This training activity focused on delving into the foundations and approaches of responsible research assessment, addressing different perspectives that help to understand its impact on the functioning of scientific institutions. Throughout the session, participants worked on analyzing how assessment processes influence organizations, as well as on the context, the need, and the principles that underpin a responsible and coherent assessment model.
The session also examined the opportunities offered by CoARA, reviewing its principles, objectives, and operation both at the international level and within the Spanish context. Emerging qualitative approaches and new metrics in research assessment were presented, alongside strategies, practices, and tools to support the implementation of an institutional plan for responsible assessment at both organisational and policy levels.
This activity was aimed at management and administrative staff from the centers of the CIGUS Network. It was held in person on March 27 and lasted 2 hours. The session was delivered by Eva Méndez, Director of the Open Science Lab at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. She is a professor in the Department of Library and Information Science at the same university, where she also served as Associate Vice-Rector for Scientific Policy and for Strategy and Digital Education. Her professional career includes coordinating various meta-research projects linked to open science, such as the development of citizen science initiatives. Among her international roles, she chaired the European Commission’s Open Science Policy Platform (2018–2020) and currently serves on the Executive Board of CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment).
