CITIC researchers Amparo Alonso and Bertha Guijarro, founders of the Spanish Artificial Intelligence Society

Amparo Alonso and Bertha Guijarro, researchers at the University of A Coruña’s Information and Communication Technologies Research Centre, a member of the CIGUS Network, are part of the founding team of the newly created Spanish Society of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedicine (IABiomed). The object of this organisation is to drive research and the development of AI applied to biomedicine, an area in which technology plays a fundamental role.
The creation of this organisation is closely related to both researchers, as it stems from the Thematic Network on AI in Biomedicine, which included the University of A Coruña’s LIDIA research group, led by Amparo Alonso and represented in the network by Bertha Guijarro.
“The applications of artificial intelligence to Biomedicine are increasingly broad and extend to medical research, disease diagnosis, personalised medicine and patient care. And it is precisely for that reason that we considered it necessary to set up this society, which aims to drive collaboration between professionals working in different areas”, explained the CITIC researchers and co-founders of the society.
The objective of this society, which is made up of 42 researchers from 16 Spanish provinces, is to drive collaborative and multi-disciplinary research in the field of AI in Biomedicine. One of IABiomed’s goals is to forge links and synergies with companies and private and public organisations that can benefit directly or indirectly from the application of AI to the field of Biomedicine.
IABiomed will essentially channel its efforts to finding solutions to the present and future challenges facing this field of medical research, such as the lack of treatments for rare diseases, the problems caused by resistance to antibiotics, future pandemics or improvements to clinical procedures.
