atlanTTic collaborates in European EWOC project to improve 5G networks

A group of researchers from the Centre for Research in Telecommunication Technologies of the Universidade de Vigo, atlanTTic, which is part of the CIGUS Network – an initiative promoted by the Xunta de Galicia that brings together the centres of the system that have accredited their scientific excellence -, is participating in the international project EWOC (Enabling Virtualized Wireless and Optical Coexistence for 5G and Beyond).

The main purpose of this project, which is funded by the Horizon Europe-MSCA-DN (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions) programme with 2.3 million euros, is to make progress in optimising these networks to make them faster, more efficient and easier to use. ‘EWOC seeks to develop a new optical and wireless network solution, flexible and virtualised, to optimise the resources of 5G and beyond (B5G) networks, significantly increasing spectral efficiency,’ says Felipe Gil Castiñeira, atlanTTic researcher and professor at the School of Telecommunications Engineering, who coordinates the project at UVigo.

Last February, the 8th plenary meeting of the consortium was held, a workshop for the partners to analyse the progress and define the next steps of the project coordinated by the Instituto de Telecomunicações. Along with attlanTTic there are ten partners: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya; Politecnico di Torino; Technische Universität Dresden; University of South Wales and the companies Huawei Sweden, YLO-Verkot, Top-IX and ISRD, from nine countries: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Poland and France.
