CICA presents a report detailing its 2023 results

CICA, a member of the CIGUS Network, an initiative launched by the regional government (Xunta de Galicia) that groups together centres of accredited scientific excellence within the Galician university system, today hosted an event to present the results the centre obtained in 2023. Each year, this presentation is accompanied by the publication of an extensive report that summarises the centre’s activities and its capacity to attract research talent, as well as its growing presence in national and international projects. The report also reflects the centre’s commitment to equality and other ethical considerations, as well as its determined commitment to communicating and disseminating science among society.

Ricardo Cao, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, took part in the opening of the event, which was held following CICA’s recent accreditation as a member of the Network. Jaime Rodríguez acted as master of ceremonies, explaining to those present key aspects of the report. In turn, CICA’s director emphasised the fact that the positive results of 2023 are the result of many years’ work, which have now been acknowledged with the centre’s recent incorporation into the CIGUS Network. The Vice-Chancellor recalled CICA’s early days, back in 2015, when he was Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Transfer.

A commitment to the future based on excellence

The projection of a research centre is measured to a considerable extent by its capacity to attract and retain talent; an aspect that the centre has clearly focused on in recent years: in 2021 the CICA was home to four Ramón y Cajal researchers, but by 2023, the number of PhDs hired thanks to this prestigious grant had risen to ten. Researchers Vanessa López, Juan Manuel Bermúdez and Juan Antonio Fafián are some of the new Ramón y Cajal talents who have joined CICA over the past year. Inmaculada Jénnifer Gómez and Israel Temprano, Beatriz Galindo fellows, also added to the growing list of brilliant researchers who are set to shape the centre’s future.

A total of 178 scientific articles were published in 2023, a year-on-year rise of 15%. In addition, as Jaime Rodriguez commented, almost 80% of these articles were published in the highest rated academic journals in the first of the four quartiles, a clear reflection of the standard of research conducted at CICA.
