CICA researcher Daniel Nieto presents in Seattle the 3D bioprinter set to revolutionise fabric engineering

In June researcher Daniel Nieto from CICA, a member of the CIGUS Network, an initiative launched by the regional government (Xunta de Galicia) that groups together centres of accredited scientific excellence, travelled to Seattle to take part in the seventh edition of the World Congress of the International Society for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERMIS). The organisation’s mission is to advance global knowledge in the field, improving patient outcomes around the world.

The event brought together some of the most prominent talents in tissue engineering, including Daniel Nieto and his team from the Advanced Biofab laboratory. In collaboration with 3D biofabrication company Healthbiolux, they presented an advanced multi-material technology for creating high-resolution structures for medical applications.

Daniel Nieto joined CICA in spring 2024, bringing with him five cutting-edge research lines, ranging from advanced biofabrication for living systems engineering and biofabrication for organ and tissue engineering to research into HOTB-based technologies for holographic optical tweezer bioprinting. These lines also address complex research actions such as the development of microtissues and tumour models that replicate the physiology of these tissues for use in studying pathologies and cancer.

This ambitious team has collaborated with Healthbiolux, a company specialising in solutions for the biofabrication of vascularised microtissues and organs, for the development of a new multi-material technology set to revolutionise tissue engineering with the creation of high-resolution structures that will have far-reaching medical applications. This technology is a significant step forward in the fabrication of personalised tissue, and opens up new possibilities for the treatment of diseases and injuries.
