CIM consolidates its international leadership with nine of its researchers ranked among the most cited worldwide

The 2024 edition of the ‘Ranking of the World Scientists: World’s Top 2% Scientist’ has acknowledged the growing research capacity of the University of Vigo’s Marine Research Centre (CIM), a member of the CIGUS Network, an initiative launched by the regional government (Xunta de Galicia) that groups together centres of accredited scientific excellence. Specifically, of the 43 UVigo researchers listed in the ranking, which is based on the total number of career citations, 20% are affiliated to the CIM. These researchers are Ricardo Beiras, Carlos Bendicho, Armando Caballero, Alejandro Crespo, Jorge Domínguez, Isela Lavilla, Emilio Marañón, Francisco Peña-Pereira, and José Luis Soengas.

The database compiled by Stanford University analyses publications by “top-tier” scientists, namely researchers who rank in the top 2% of the Scopus database. The analysis provides standardised citation information for each researcher, including metrics such as the H-index, co-authorship-adjusted HM-index, citations by author position, and a composite indicator, among other factors, which are presented both with and without self-citations. The ranking offers a global perspective on the citation impact of each researcher’s entire career, as well as a ranking based on data from the most recent year, 2023. The first, career-long list, contains 217,097 researchers, whilst the second, related to 2023 citations, features 223,152 scientists. The ranking also includes a classification of researchers based on their fields of knowledge, with a total of 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields, in accordance with the Science-Metrix standard classification.

Based on citations generated during 2023, the CIM has increased its representation, with 11 of the 50 University of Vigo researchers included in the list: Ricardo Beiras, Carlos Bendicho, Armando Caballero, Alejandro Crespo, Jorge Domínguez, Moncho Gómez-Gesteira, Luis Gimeno, Isela Lavilla, Emilio Marañón, Elena Ojea, Francisco Peña-Pereira, and José Luis Soengas.

Furthermore, within the field-specific rankings, several University of Vigo researchers are listed among the top 500 in their respective areas: Jorge Domínguez, a professor in the Department of Ecology and Animal Biology and a CIM researcher, ranks 255th in Agronomy and Agriculture; José Manuel Domínguez, a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, ranks 332nd in Biotechnology; Armando Caballero ranks 477th in Evolutionary Biology; and Emilio Marañón, a professor of Ecology and Animal Biology and a CIM researcher, ranks 487th in Marine Biology and Hydrobiology.

These results confirm Galicia’s leadership in research of excellence, recognizing its outstanding contributions that meet the highest international standards and its significant contribution to the advancement of marine environment knowledge on a global scale.
