CiMUS researcher Jose M. Tubío receives one of the 58 Leonardo Grants, the only one in Galicia in the 2024 call

The BBVA Foundation has awarded one of the 58 Leonardo Grants, and the only one in Galicia in this latest call, to Jose M. Tubío, the principal investigator at CiMUS, a member of the CIGUS Network, an initiative launched by the regional government (Xunta de Galicia) that groups together centres of accredited scientific excellence. This accolade is a landmark achievement in Tubío’s scientific career. The 11th edition of this prestigious programme to support excellence in science and culture selected in the area of Biology and Biomedicine, the study ‘Somatic Mutation of Liver Tissue in the Context of Hepatitis B’, led by the Santiago de Compostela-based researcher, will receive €40,000 in funding for its development over the next 18 months.

The BBVA Foundation informed Jose M. Tubío that “the process of awarding the grants proved particularly competitive, with a total of 1,392 applicants across the ten fields included in the call, including 270 in the area of Biology and Biomedicine”. This is a further cause of satisfaction and another boost for my work within the Galician research ecosystem,” the CiMUS scientist stated with pride.

Jose M. Tubío, an outstanding profile in cancer research

In addition to his role as a science communicator, the CiMUS scientist from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) is nationally and internationally renowned for his leading role in cancer research and, more broadly, for the global impact of his publications. In this sense, in 2019, he was recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher 2019 by the Web of Science in the cross-field category, identifying him as one of the world’s most influential scientists in terms of the quality of his research output.

In 2020, he received the ASEICA Young Investigator Award from the Spanish Association for Cancer Research (ASEICA by its Spanish initials). Furthermore, in 2021, he received the 11th ‘Doctores Diz Pintado’ National Cancer Research Award, and most recently, in 2022, the 3rd ‘Ramiro Carregal’ International Award for Young Talents working in the field of Oncology.
