The Marine Research Centre (CIM) from Universidade de Vigo, a member of the CIGUS Network – an initiative promoted by the Xunta that brings together institutions in the system that have demonstrated scientific excellence – has established a strategic alliance with Canada’s Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), and has joined the Transforming Climate Action, an international excellence network focused on ocean climate change research.
The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) is an international consortium and a global benchmark in ocean research, led by the Canadian university Dalhousie University. This climate change research programme is one of the largest in the world. As the director of CIM, Daniel Rey, states: “The programme aligns with the Centre’s strategic objectives of promoting excellence and international cooperation in marine research. It is worth noting that CIM’s contribution helped position the University among the top 75 in the Shanghai Ranking this year in the field of oceanography.”
Being part of this international consortium enables the launch of a research exchange programme, fostering scientific collaboration between both organisations and promoting international mobility. Through this partnership, CIM researchers will gain access to new professional development opportunities with internationally renowned institutions specialising in the study of climate change in marine ecosystems.
Among other initiatives, this programme will allow CIM to work alongside researchers from leading universities such as Dalhousie University, Université Laval, Memorial University, University of Bergen, and Université du Québec à Rimouski, as well as prestigious research centres like the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution – WHOI (USA) and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany). Additionally, institutions such as NASA and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO are also part of this network.
This international alliance and collaboration, which enhances the impact of marine research, is part of the CIM strategic commitment.
