IGFAE opens its summer internship programme 

The Galician Institute of High Energy Physics (IGFAE), — a joint centre of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and the Xunta de Galicia, and part of the CIGUS network, an initiative that brings together research centres recognised for scientific excellence — has launched a new call for applications for its 2026 summer internship programme. 

The programme is aimed at undergraduate students with an excellence curriculum from around the world, with the goal of providing their first contact with research through extracurricular internships linked to scientific projects carried out at the institute. 

Selected participants will be integrated into the daily activity of IGFAE, taking part in research projects in areas such as particle physics, astroparticle physics, nuclear physics or quantum science and technology. The programme also includes the possibility of joining non-strictly scientific areas such as management, communication or outreach. 

The call offers a minimum of six positions. Five of them are reserved for students from scientific and technical fields such as Physics, Engineering, Mathematics or Chemistry, while one is intended for candidates from other disciplines, in order to promote diversity within the programme. 

The internships will last one month, preferably between 1 and 31 July 2026, with a workload of 30 hours per week. The schedule will be agreed with the research team responsible for each project. 

To apply, candidates must be enrolled in one of the final two years of their undergraduate degree and have completed at least 55% of their credits, with a minimum average grade of 8 out of 10. The selection process will primarily assess academic records, as well as the applicants’ CV and motivation letter. 

The financial support associated with the internships will amount to €800 gross, subject to applicable deductions. The programme also includes accommodation in a university residence and provides travel grants up to €80 for students from Galicia, €500 for the rest of Spain and €2,000 for international students, subject to justification. 

The application period will open on 10 June 2026 and will remain open until 16 June at 23:59 (CEST).
