The CRETUS researcher José Manuel Sabucedo joins the Spanish Academy of Psychology

José Manuel Sabucedo, professor and researcher at CRETUS — a center that it is part of the CIGUS Network, an initiative promoted by the Xunta de Galicia that brings together the system’s centers accredited for their scientific excellence — joined today the Spanish Academy of Psychology. His inaugural lecture, titled “Political Psychology,” addressed the rise of extremism in democratic contexts and its effects, how group behaviors can generate anti-democratic actions, and how social psychology can contribute to analysing and, when necessary, preventing undesirable consequences.

The professor from the Department of Social, Basic, and Methodological Psychology at USC was unanimously elected as an academic and will occupy seat number 43 at the Academy. This appointment recognizes not only his academic career but also his contribution to the development of Psychology as a pioneer of Political Psychology in Spain and a promoter of this field in Latin America. José Manuel is a prominent member of the International Society of Social Psychology, the founder and first president of the Spanish Scientific Society of Social Psychology, and editor of the Journal of Social Psychology. Academically, he was the first Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at USC and of the Spanish Conference of Deans of Psychology
