The NeurObesity group at CiMUS receives the 2025 Galicia Technology Transfer Prize

The NeurObesity research group at CiMUS, a centre affiliated with the University of Santiago and a member of the CIGUS network — an initiative promoted by the Xunta de Galicia that brings together centres within the system recognised for their scientific excellence — has been awarded the 2025 Galicia Technology Transfer Prize, granted by the Galician Royal Academy of Sciences (RAGC), in collaboration with the Galician Innovation Agency.

The group, led by Oportunius researcher Miguel López — a global authority on obesity and metabolic neuroscience — received the Fernando Calvet Prats Prize, which recognises a successful case of technology transfer to a company, for its promising anti-obesity therapy.

The CiMUS team has transferred its technology to Gazella Biotech, a spin-off from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), focused on developing advanced therapies to treat metabolic diseases.

This innovative therapy is based on the development of small extracellular vesicles that modulate energy balance. The technology has shown promising results in preclinical trials, improving obesity and metabolic indicators in mice without adverse effects.

Published in high-impact journals such as Nature Metabolism and Metabolism, and protected by patents, this therapy represents a paradigm shift in precision medicine, with the potential to impact not only obesity, but also neurological and cardiovascular diseases.
