The three centers of the CIGUS network at the University of Vigo secure nearly 2 million euros from the National Plan
December 14th, 2024

Of the 40 research projects from the University of Vigo that received funding from the National Plan, 13 are led by teaching and research staff affiliated with the three CIGUS centers at the University of Vigo: the Center for Nanomaterials and Biomedicine Research (CINBIO), the Center for Telecommunications Technology Research (atlanTTic), and the Marine Research Center (CIM). All of them belong to the CIGUS Network, an initiative promoted by the Xunta de Galicia that brings together centers in the system that have accredited their scientific excellence. Together, they captured nearly €2 million. CINBIO alone secured five projects and €844,000.
The project that received the highest funding in this call aims to develop cutting-edge strategies for in situ continuous monitoring of antibiotics in aquatic environments. Led by CINBIO Director Miguel Ángel Correa and funded with €281,250, the project addresses the limitations of current methods to align with global health priorities focused on combating antibiotic pollution and, consequently, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), an issue estimated to be linked to approximately 4.95 million deaths in 2019.
